 CONCEPTS OF AYURVED

Earth Sky Air Fire Water

1. CONCEPT OF PANCHMAHABHUT

Panchkahabhut is known as five elements.
They are ….
 [1] PRUTHVI MAHABHUT = Earth
[2] AKASH MAHABHUT = Sky – Firmament -Space
 [3] VAYU MAHABHUT= Air
 [4] TEJ MAHABHOOT = Fire – Light
 [5] JAL MAHABHOOT = Water

The total materials and creatures of this universe are brought in to existence with composition of Panch Mahabhut – five basic elements. Thus human body is also composed by Panchmahabhut – five basic elements according to ancient science.

Pruthvi mahabhut and Aakash mahabhut has no any motion according to the ancient science and they both are called STHIRA MAHABHUT= Steady element, though it is proved by the modern scientists that earth has its own motion.

Vayu, Tej and Jala mahabut has its own particular motion like

Vayu = Air moves every where. Wherever it finds space Air moves
Tej = Fire has only upwards motion. It goes only up side.
Jala = Water has only down wards motion. It goes only down side unless  by lifting by pump.

These three active Mahabhut – elements are termed in the body as
  [1] VAATA
  [2] PITTA
  [3] KAPHA
This can be compared with the principle of air water and fire. These three are collectively known as TRI DOSH.

2. CONCEPT OF TRIDOSH

Vaata Pitta Kapha

DOSH
Vaata, Pitta and Kapha are called TRI DOSH as they are only three.
Vaata Dosh controls all the movement of the body. Vaata Dosh is the main and important Dosh in the body. Vaata Dosh has a strength to lead the other two Dosh Pitta and Kapha. Vaata Dosh is the strongest Dosh in the body.

The disorders of Vaata are also in more number. There Are Eighty Vaata Dosh disorders are described in classics. They are known as VAAJ NIJ ROG.

Pitta Dosh controls metabolism in the body.

Kapha Dosh controls structure of the body.

Every cell of the body contains TRI DOSH
Each Dosh are located in the body at its own particular place.
Each Dosh are divided in to five parts, that is sub Dosh. Total fifteen Dosh are described with their particular location and function.

Dosh are vitiating factor in the body. Dosh vitiates Dhatu, Mal, Srotas, Ashayas, etc. But they do not vitiated by any other.
Dosh are not visible. But experience by the physical process governs by them.
The balance – equilibrium of Tri Dosh is responsible for health and imbalance – disequilibrium of them creates various diseases. Imbalance means depleting of Dosh and aggravation of Dosh. Thus Dosh has three condition.
  SAMA AVASTHA = Normal condition
  KSHAY AVASTHA=Depleting condition
  VRUDDHI AVASTHA = Aggravation condition

Dosh sustain the body in a balance state. Vaata Dosh is very active but Pitta and Kapha is more passive.

Vaata is responsible for each and every movement of the body and it governs mainly all the functions of nervous system.

Pitta is responsible for the digestive system and metabolism mainly and it maintains the temperature – heat of the body.

Kapha is responsible for the structure of the body and it maintains the smoothness and moisture in the body.

Ayurved advice to maintain Dosh nearer to the normal condition – in equilibrium condition. Nature helps to maintain Dosh to maintain normal condition by natural process.

The dietary habits and life style is responsible for the equilibrium and disequilibrium of the Dosh. The disequilibrium of Dosh is responsible to disturb the normal functions of Dosh. This is the cause to create diseases.

DHATU
Dhatu is the part of concept of Tri Dosh. Dhatu - basic tissue elements are seven.
  RASA DHATU – Chyle
RAKTA DHATU – Basic tissue elements of blood
MANS DHATU – Basic tissue elements of flesh
MED DHATU – Basic tissue elements of adipose tissue
ASTHI DHATU – Basic tissue elements of bones
MAJJA DHATU – Basic tissue elements of bone marrow
SHUKRA DHATU – Baisc tissue elements of reproductive

Dhatu are vitiated by the Dosh. Dhatu is known as Dushya also.
Each Dhatu has its own Agni, and known as Dhatvagni. This can be compare with endocrine secretions.

Dhatu has three conditions
   SAMA AVASTHA -Normal state
   KSHAY AVASTHA – Depleting state
   VRUDDHI AVASTHA – Aggravation state

Dhatus are collectively called DUSHYA. Dushya means who is vitiated by others. They never vitiates others.

Symptoms of the above three condition of Dhatu is very well described in the classics of Ayurved.

These Dhatus are responsible to maintain body as well as health. Dhatus are nourished by the food materials.

MALA
Mala is also a part of concept of Tri Dosh. They are three in number.
  PURISHA – Foeces
  MUTRA – Urine
  SWED – Sweat

Mala has three condition
  [1] SAMA AVASTHA -Normal state
[2] KSHAY AVASTHA – Depleting state
[3] VRUDDHI AVASTHA – Aggravation state

Mala and Dhatu are collectively called DUSHYA. Dushya means who is vitiated but never vitiates others.

4. CONCEPT OF AGNI

Agni means fire. Agni is responsible for metabolism in the body. Agni regulates the condition of the Dosh, Dhatu and Mala.
Agni is divided in 3 part.
   1.One Jatharagni –
   2.Seven Dhatvagni –
   3.Five Bbhutagni –
1. Jatharagni is the principle Agni and it can be compared with Digestion power. Jatharagni is located in the digestive system.

2. Dhatvagni is located in each Dhatu and it regulates the metabolism of Dhatu. The strength of Dhatvagni is depends upon the strength of Jatharagni.

Seven Dhatvagni are
  1. Rasa Dhatvagni
  2. Rakta Dhatvagni
  3. Mans Dhatvagni
  4. Med Dhatvagni
  5. Asthi Dhatvagni
  6. Majja Dhatavagni
  7. Shukra Dhatvagni

3. Bhutagni is related with the Panchmahabhut – five basic elements. The strength of Bhutagni is depends upon the strength of Jathagni. Bhutagni are located in the particles of Mahabhut in the body.

Agni is divided again in four type.
  1. Tikshnagni – excess power
  2. Mrudu Agni – less power
  3. Sama Agni – normal power
  4. Visham Agni – irregular power

Excess Pitta increases the strength of Agni and Agni becomes Tikshna – strong.

Excess Kapha decreases the strength of Agni and Agni becomes Mrudu. – less power.

Excess Vaata creates irregular Agni and Agni becomes Visham – irregular. It means sometimes Agni becomes strong and sometimes becomes poor.

Agni is an important factor for the purpose of treatment.
Agni is responsible for proper metabolism.
Jatharagni digest the food materials, Dhatvagni digest its own Dhatu and divides it in to two part.
[1] Sara – substantive part
[2] Kitta – end products. The substantive part produces next Dhatu.

4. CONCEPT OF SAAM NIRAM
[‘NIRAM DEHASYA HI BHESAJANI UKTANI AMRUTOPAMANI’]

Above stanza of Pandit Varruchi, in Yog Shatak highlights the concept of Saam Niram. The meaning of this stanza is that, “only in Niram status, Medicine, treatment gives miraculous results.”

‘Saam Niram’ is a peculiar and an important result oriented concept in Ayurved and this concept have no correlation with modern chemistry. It is an important factor in a cause of disease and in modification of disease process. This concept is an important and result oriented concept for the treatment in Ayurved.

‘AAM’ originates from improperly digested food materials toxic particles which clog the channels of circulations in the body. [SHROTORODH ] Some of these channels are physical and include the intestines, lymphatic system, arteries and veins, capillaries, and genitourinary tract. Others are nonphysical channels called NADIS through which energy flows. ‘AAM’ toxicity accumulates wherever there is a weakness in the body and will resulted in to disease.

Normal activity of digestive power [AGNI] is essential for the complete and proper digestion of intake. But due to low digestive power [MANDAGNI] the food is not properly digested, and toxic product is formed is AAM. Therefore its absorption becomes sluggish and it gets retained in the system for a longer time. Due to this retention it becomes fermented or even putrefied. This toxic product remains unabsorbed in the system because of its incomplete digestion and it is the root cause of all diseases.

Tissue metabolism plays an important role in the process of formation of tissues from the nutrient substances (of the particular Dhatu). Hence when the power of the tissue metabolism [DHATVAGNI] of a particular tissue is diminished, either in the liver or in a particular channel, the formation or utilization of that tissue becomes incomplete and AAM is produced. Such tissues containing AAM are called SAAM, - tissues with AAM. This type of pathology is seen in various diseases. In diabetes, fat and muscle tissues are formed as "SAAM TISSUES" because of the low tissue metabolism of the fat and muscle tissues. Hence the normal functional activities of these tissues are hampered. In obesity a similar type of fat tissue is produced due to low tissue metabolism of fat tissue. A peculiar thing observed in these two conditions is that, though there is low tissue metabolism, there is no associated low digestive power; on the contrary digestive power becomes sharper. In all other types of low tissue metabolism there is an associated low digestive power.

AGNI is the energy responsible for transformation of food substances into body tissues. In the first stage it produces nutritious substance, which is converted to tissues in the second phase of digestion, which is called secondary or tissue digestion. Here the action of tissue metabolism takes place on nutrient food substances, and different tissues are produced. This is the anabolic activity of tissue fire.

The tissues produced by this process are utilized for the liberation of energy required for each and every activity of the body. During this process the tissue substances are again digested, disintegrated, and utilized for the liberation of heat and energy by the tissue metabolism. This is the catabolic process. During this activity of disintegration of tissues certain minute waste products are formed. They are called subtle waste products or KLEDA. Up to a certain limit the existence of these is essential for the body, and the excess is excreted from the body. When this excretion becomes inadequate due to excessive production or its defective excretion, it gets accumulated in the body-which results in the formation of toxic substance – AAM.

Every Dosh has certain qualities, which are antagonistic to the qualities of other Dosh - e.g. the dry and light qualities of Vaata are antagonistic to the oily and heavy qualities of Kapha. Similarly the hot quality of Pitta is antagonistic to the cold quality of Kapha and Vaata. Therefore when two or three Dosh become severely vitiated and combined, they produce interaction between them. In such conditions opposite qualities, instead of nullifying each other interact and produce a toxic substance.

Properties of AAM

-> It is always in the form of incompletely digested substance.
-> Hence it is non-homogenous, has a very bad or foul odor which can be experienced only when it is combined with excretory products such as sweat, urine, and feces, or when products such as sputum, vomit, etc., are expelled from the body.
  -> It is very sticky.
-> It produces lethargy in the body.

Symptoms of AAM
Srotorodhan – Obstruction of circulatory channels - This can occur in any large, small, or minute channel, when it is indicated by stagnation and disturbance in transport, and metabolism can occur even at the cellular level. The commonly observed obstructions are in the liver [affecting the passage of bile], the urinary tract, the fallopian tubes, the blood vessels, the respiratory tract, etc.

Weakness or reduced working power in any part or organ is due to the difficulty produced by AAM in the contraction and relaxation of the musculature of the part, even when the organic structure of the muscle is normal.
Obstruction of the movement of Vaata - AAM on one side causes disturbance in the action of the musculature of the part or organ, and on the other side it causes disturbances in the conduction of nerve impulses, and ultimately the activity of the concerned part becomes reduced or stopped. It will create lack mental clarity and energy and feel weary and unenthusiastic
Heaviness and Lethargy.
Tongue is coated especially upon awaking in the morning.
Metabolic disturbance Due to various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, etc., metabolic disturbance is produced.
Signs of AAM

Feeling heavy, muzzy headed, unclear thinking, aches and pains, bloating, gas, skin blemishes, fever, lack of energy, stickiness, foul smells (breath, sweat, urine, stools, phlegm), sinking stool, mucous in stool, turbid urine, lack of appetite or taste, indigestion, sticky/sweet taste in the mouth, copious phlegm. Pulse; deep, dull, slippery, Tongue thick, greasy coating.

Modern signs of Aam:
High triglycerides, atherosclerosis, late-onset diabetes, high blood sugar levels, some forms of depression, rheumatoid factor, the presence of H. pylori bacteria, leukocytosis or leukocytopenia (deficient and excess white blood cells), excess anti-bodies, Candida albicans in the gut and uterus, blood urea, gout, excess platelet count, excess red blood cells, gall stones as a sign of excess bile, kidney stones as a sign of un-metabolized calcium and oxalates, high liver enzymes (ALT, AST), intra-ocular pressure [glaucoma], bacterial infection, high temperature, tumors.

Effects of AAM
When such toxins come in contact with Dosh, tissues, or waste product, it produces SAAM DOSH, SAAM DHATU and SAAM MALA. In Ayurvedic texts symptoms of the SAAM and NIRAM stage of the Dosh, tissues, and waste products are described for all the diseases.

Ayurveda attributes cause of any disease to an imbalance in one or all of the Dosh and for successful treatment of a particular disease physician has to determine, weather the imbalanced Dosh is 'SAAM' or 'NIRAM' .

Thus, according to this concept, Agnimandya is the causes for AAM, this Agnimandya is even not able to digest drugs. Hence, in Saam condition of the patient drugs are unable to give its proper effects and will not be able to cure diseases. After creating Niram status drugs will give miraculous results.
